I guess it’s time to brush the toddler’s teeth

I guess it’s time to brush the toddler’s teeth

Confession time: I’ve never brushed Ellie’s teeth. She’s 17 months. But obviously she has learned how it works from watching other people. Today she saw Grace’s toothbrush stuck to the sink and pointed to it. I figured she could play with it for a while. I’m not afraid of germs. As soon as I gave it to her, she opened the cabinet and pulled out the toothpaste. She sat down and did this: And then this: So I grabbed the brush and brushed her teeth a little to show her the brushing motion. Then she took the brush back...

Zoo Boo was exhausting

I was going to blog about Zoo Boo at Como Park tonight but I’m just too exhausted. “What are you talkin’ about Ma? I’m still wide awake.”

“This much I know” about my kids

“This much I know” about my kids

Bathtubs work magic on crabby children. Except Ellie. She just gets mad. When one child naps, another awakes. Connor often wakes Ellie to play. Tired Ellie sounds like dying Pac-Man. Connor tell us when he’s sleepy. Grace fights sleep like I did. They want to be near me. Except when they really really don’t. I want to be near them. Except when I really really don’t. Ellie won’t drink from a bottle. Connor will drink anything, even coffee. Grace likes water and Sprite most. Grace butts into everyone else’s business. She asks 80 quadrillion questions daily. Connor wears nail...

Lake Itaska – birth of the ‘Sippi Riber’

Lake Itaska – birth of the ‘Sippi Riber’

We have returned home from our happiest place on Earth. Not Disneyland. The cabin. Mark is always intent on taking the kids to Lake Itasca the first year they come to the cabin. I didn’t really want to go this year, but decided to join them when I saw how excited the big kids were. Grace: “We’re going to that place with the rocks. Where you walk across the river.” Connor: “Sippi Riber! Sippi Riber!” We started with a picnic lunch. Mark had bought the kids special metal lunchboxes in town the day before and packed food for them....

My kids are doctor champs

My kids are doctor champs

My kids love going to the doctor and dentist. I feel like that is not normal, so I’m grateful for it. Connor had his 3-year-old checkup today. He got one booster shot and barely even winced at it. He passed his first eye exam and was very cute telling the nurse which shapes he knows how to draw (circle, cross, moon) and which ones he doesn’t (boat, heart). He also told me to tell the nurse and doctor that he gets to go to “gymnastics school” now. (He starts when the next session starts now that he’s potty trained.)...

My first bottle snob – what to do?

March 23, 2010

The last few times Mark has taken care of Ellie while I’m gone, she has refused to take a bottle. I had thought maybe she just wasn’t really hungry. Maybe she was crying because she was tired and Mark interpreted it as hunger She has taken a bottle for a couple of sitters without a problem. But the other day, I ran to the store. Mark called saying she wouldn’t stop crying and wouldn’t take a bottle of breastmilk so he tried a bottle of formula and she wouldn’t take that either. I came home and she latched on...

Frazzled mom, lots of poop, naked baby

January 11, 2010

Ellie had her two-week check-up on Friday. (Yes, she was four weeks old.) And Connor had his three-year check-up, or so I thought. We just barely made it to the clinic in time for Connor’s 3:30 appointment, after Grace’s haircut took longer than expected. After a 15-minute wait in line, we checked in and I prepared for the snotty “your appointment has lapsed” response I got at our last visit, when we were 15 minutes late. The receptionist was very nice, but it turns out I had scheduled Connor for Wednesday instead of Friday. I must have clicked the...

It’s a girl!

It’s a girl!

“Is he OK? He’s kind of blue. He’s not crying.” Those were the first things I said when my baby was born. Worry much?? My midwife’s response (or maybe it was Mark. Or maybe my imagination.) was something like: “He’s fine. And he’s a girl.” I always said I had no intuition about what gender the baby would be, yet I always referred to it using male pronouns. But Eleanor Dolores is here, and I’m thrilled to have another little girl. Grace adores her and says things like “I knew you would be a girl, just for me. I...
