Connor quotes

Connor is always saying things that crack me up. Many of them go unrecorded but here are some that made it to Twitter or Facebook this year. Some of them seemed funnier at the time but I’ll include them anyway. Mark and I and his grandparents were talking about how unusually funny he is but today I read through all my old kid talk posts and saw that Grace said some pretty hilarious stuff at his age too. “I think those are all the rememberies I have, Mom. My brain just goes dark after that.” 10/13/11 “We’re pretending our...

A 4-year-old’s smoothie recipe

Welcome to the November Carnival of Natural Parenting: Kids in the Kitchen This post was written for inclusion in the monthly Carnival of Natural Parenting hosted by Hobo Mama and Code Name: Mama. This month our participants have shared how kids get involved in cooking and feeding. Please read to the end to find a list of links to the other carnival participants. ***   When Connor came home from school the other day, he was set on having a smoothie. We had very little yogurt, no ice, no fresh fruit. But he was determined. I decided to...

Learning about the world around us

December 22, 2010

Connor and I recently watched a billboard ad being changed. He spotted the crane pulling the old one off as we left the chiropractor. I asked him if he wanted to stay and watch how they put the new one on. We stood in the entryway for 20 minutes watching. After the crane pulls the old sign off the billboard, it lifts up the new one, rolled around a tube, like a giant roll of wrapping paper. Two workers unroll the sign along the billboard. They insert metal rods in the edges, like inserting a curtain rod in a...

I want my snack, no dinner, wait this is dog food

At dinner last night, Connor would not eat his mac and cheese because he said it was for dogs, not boys. (There is a cartoon dog on the box.) When it came time for bed, he started pestering Mark with, “What is for my snack! What is for my snack. Dad! What is for my snack????? I am hungry. Where is my snack?” Mark:  “You can have your mac and cheese” Connor: “You can have that. You can’t change that. Don’t say that.” Mark: “What?” Connor: “YOU CAN’T CHANGE IT. YOU AREN’T GETTING IT FOR ME. Daddy, For real...

Is coffee good for big boys?

Is coffee good for big boys?

I bought a new coffee maker and was setting it up this morning when this happened: Connor: Can I have my own cup of coffee? Me: Coffee isn’t good for little boys. Connor: Is it good for big boys? Me: I guess so. Connor: Well you just called me the wrong direction. I’m not little. I’m big. Me: Oh, OK. Connor: So can I have my own cup of coffee? I gave him a mug with about a half shot of espresso and a bunch of steamed coconut milk. Connor, with mug: Do I look like a mommy now?...

The things kids say

September 1, 2010

Me: It was really good that you told Dad right away when Connor tried to run into the street. Grace: Well he IS my little brother. I love him. That’s why I squeeze him so much. Grace naming the six kids in her belly: Red, pink, purple, maroon, Westpfahl and Eighteen. Connor naming his kid: Red glass Connor, carrying his fireman gear: There is something stuck on our roof. I need to get it down. Me: What is it? Connor: A tiny, little girl. Grace: Mom, there are three things I love more than you. The pool, Simone (her...

“This much I know” about my kids

“This much I know” about my kids

Bathtubs work magic on crabby children. Except Ellie. She just gets mad. When one child naps, another awakes. Connor often wakes Ellie to play. Tired Ellie sounds like dying Pac-Man. Connor tell us when he’s sleepy. Grace fights sleep like I did. They want to be near me. Except when they really really don’t. I want to be near them. Except when I really really don’t. Ellie won’t drink from a bottle. Connor will drink anything, even coffee. Grace likes water and Sprite most. Grace butts into everyone else’s business. She asks 80 quadrillion questions daily. Connor wears nail...

Lake Itaska – birth of the ‘Sippi Riber’

We have returned home from our happiest place on Earth. Not Disneyland. The cabin. Mark is always intent on taking the kids to Lake Itasca the first year they come to the cabin. I didn’t really want to go this year, but decided to join them when I saw how excited the big kids were. Grace: “We’re going to that place with the rocks. Where you walk across the river.” Connor: “Sippi Riber! Sippi Riber!” We started with a picnic lunch. Mark had bought the kids special metal lunchboxes in town the day before and packed food for them....
